TORBAY NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH WORKS ALONGSIDE THOSE CHARITIES AND GROUPS THAT SHARE THEIR AIMS AND CONCERNS - HELPING VULNERABLE, LONELY, ISOLATED PEOPLE WHO OFTEN HAVE A FEAR OF CRIME, AND KEEPING EVERYONE AS SAFE AND CRIME FREE AS POSSIBLE.
NHW does all that it can to support and promote other
charities and other groups,
and because we have seen that each charity and group deals
with a different aspect of those shared concerns,
supporting each other makes perfect sense.
You will find a TORBAY COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT TRUST Community Builder in every neighbourhood. They can be found on a street, at a bus stop, in a local cafe and in the local community centre.
Although they support everyone, Community Builders
are particularly concerned
about older people who have become isolated and lonely.
This is also a Neighbourhood Watch concern, for such people
are the target of doorstep fraudsters, who try to trick the unwary
out of money.
THERE IS A COMMUNITY BUILDER IN YOUR AREA

Community Builders bring lonely, isolated people together, and
this enables them to help themselves, and each other.
The Builders have been instrumental in starting up craft groups,
regular coffee mornings, support groups and a transport
scheme which have all made an enormous difference to people's
well-being and quality of life

Community Building in Torbay
What is a Community Builder? In a nutshell they are a builder of community. A person whose job it is to help reconnect people in a neighbourhood, to find the hidden treasures, the wealth of skills, experience, and knowledge that exists in all our neighbourhoods and make the assets in that area - the parks, the buildings - accessible to as many people as possible. Builders find out what local people care enough about to want to change, encouraging them, deciding with them what to do, telling them stories about how others have come together to make life better, equipping them with tools and resources and then stepping back and giving people the space to make their neighbourhood work. Community Building is subtle, it takes time and sometimes a leap of faith. But we know it is working in other parts of the country and we are fortunate to have the support of the founders of Community Building in UK and Europe. They have seen time and time again that by linking people together great things can happen. Small actions add up to big changes, and they have proved that changes in neighbourhoods are best brought about by the people that live there. Now it is Torbay's chance.
We have 12 Community Builders working across the Bay - 1 in Brixham, 4 in Paignton and 7 in Torquay. Every neighbourhood has a Builder. You won't find them in an office, they will be on the street, at the bus stop, in the local café, in the community centre. They are there to help anyone and everyone. They also have a particular focus on supporting older people that have become isolated -of which there are many in Torbay. To date the Builders have helped local people set up craft groups, coffee mornings, support groups, a community transport scheme, a pop up community café, music clubs, they have linked people with the same interest, they have helped find volunteers for local community centres, the list is endless. All achieved through the passion and commitment of local people.
